xwave to deliver Maritime Helicopter Mission-Training Systems

2005.11.01 High-fidelity simulation to support aircrew training for CH148 Cyclone Maritime

OTTAWA, ON -xwave, an Aliant Company (TSX: AIT), has signed a multi-million dollar contract with General Dynamics Canada, part of the Sikorsky Aircraft-led Maritime Helicopter Team, to develop ground-based simulators and software in support of Canada`s new CH148 Cyclone helicopters. The simulators and software will be installed at the new Maritime Helicopter Training Centre at Canadian Forces Base Shearwater, Nova Scotia in 2008.

This project is part of xwave`s contribution to the Maritime Helicopter Project (MHP), for which prime contractor Sikorsky Aircraft is building 28 new CH148 Cyclone helicopters that it will maintain over 20 years.

Under this contract, xwave will build and deliver a product called the Mission Procedures Trainer (MPT). It is a variation of xwave`s Mission Crew Trainer (MCT), an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) simulator for airborne platforms. The MPT is a software-based solution that operates on a configured PC in conjunction with real mission equipment. Using high-fidelity sensor simulations, instructors can create realistic flight scenarios to train partial or whole air crews in areas of tactics, procedures, and equipment operation. xwave will also build other high-fidelity elements of the CH148 Cyclone mission simulators, including the electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor and world environment simulations.

`As a longtime provider and partner to organizations in the defence sector, xwave is delighted at the prospect of drawing from its expertise to support General Dynamics Canada in achieving its goals,` said Don McClure, Regional Director, Ottawa, xwave. `This project is a solid fit for all parties involved, and reinforces our reputation as a highly knowledgeable, reputable builder of simulation systems.`

xwave is an experienced developer of simulation technology, having been chosen by General Dynamics Canada following a rigorous selection process that took into account criteria such as breadth of knowledge, extent of resources, and years in operation. The company has been a key defence and aerospace contractor for more than three decades. In addition to its work for the MHP, xwave is currently developing the hardware and software for an Air-to-Air Re-fuelling (AAR) mission-management system for Airbus Deutschland GmbH; the AAR system will be used on German and Canadian Airbus A310 Multi-role Transport Tankers (MRTTs). xwave recently developed a situation-awareness knowledge portal called COP 21 for Defence R&D Canada (DRDC). COP 21 will help demonstrate for Canadian Forces personnel what the Common Operational Picture will look like in the 21st century, enabling personnel to better collect and analyze the wide range of disparate data needed to support intelligence and operations. For the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation, xwave has built a fully-integrated digital flight-data and cockpit-voice recorder ground-analysis system; the system enables in-depth data recovery and analysis that allows aviation officials to do everything from examine raw decoded data to reconstruct complete 3D animations.
