xwave to deliver airborne mission system to Airbus Deutschland

2005.07.19 Systems to be installed in German and Canadian air force transport planes

OTTAWA, ON - xwave, an Aliant Company (TSX: AIT), has signed a contract with Airbus Deutschland GmbH. xwave will supply Airbus Deutschland with the hardware and software for the Air-to-Air Re-fuelling (AAR) mission management system for airborne use on German and Canadian air force Airbus A310 Multi-role Transport Tanker (MRTT) aircraft.

`xwave, as a very competitive and experienced developer of defence and aerospace technology, has been chosen by Airbus and its customers as result of an Industrial Selection Process that considered all technical and commercial aspects being part of the offers of the participating bidding companies,` said Rolf Luedemann, Vice President, Military Derivatives, Airbus Deutschland GmbH. `xwave`s experience in this sector is of major importance in helping Airbus Deutschland deliver an efficient and cost-effective AAR Mission Management System-thus providing clients with the tactical advantages of extended flying time and flight range of their fighter aircraft.`

The AAR Mission Management System will be installed in the Fuel Operating Station (FOS) and will be used for mission planning; in-flight mission management, fuel off-load management, and providing improved Operator situational awareness by interfacing with the on-board video monitoring system. Refueling is carried out through two pods located at each of the MRTT wingtips, enabling two fighter aircraft, such as the Tornado or F-18 Hornet, to re-fuel at the same time.

The Airbus A310 MRTT is modelled on the commercial version of the A310-300, and can fulfill a wide range of tasks. For this reason, the A310 MRTT is in use by several air forces worldwide. xwave`s AAR Mission Management System will be installed in aircraft belonging to the German and Canadian air forces. Conversion of these planes to incorporate re-fuelling capabilities is being carried out by the Consortium A310 MRTT Luftwaffe, a joint venture of both Airbus Deutschland GmbH and Lufthansa Technik AG.

`As a longtime supplier of mission-critical systems, xwave is delighted at the prospect of using its expertise to support Airbus in achieving its goals, and enable its military clients to improve their operations,` said Don McClure, Regional Director, Ottawa, xwave. `This project is a solid fit for all parties involved, and reinforces our reputation as a knowledgeable system integrator in the defence sector.`

xwave has been a key defence and aerospace contractor for more than three decades. The company has recently developed a situation-awareness knowledge portal for Defence R&D Canada (DRDC). The portal will help demonstrate what the Common Operational Picture (COP 21) for Canadian Forces will look like in the 21st century. Also, xwave recently installed a digital flight data and cockpit voice recorder ground-analysis system for the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation (MCA). Fully integrated, the system enables in-depth data recovery and analysis, allowing Egyptian aviation officials to examine raw decoded data through to complete reconstructed 3D animations.
